Creative Views
Many homes are located on lots that either have a steep slope, or are located on property that allows the opportunity to enhance the already scenic views, such as a waterfront home.
Negative Edge Pools
Negative edge pools, rather than have having 4 distinct sides defining the edges, have one or more sides that appear to have no edge. In reality, the water at this edge runs over the pool wall into a collection basin at the bottom of the wall, and is recirculated back into the pool. A Negative edge provides the illusion that the pool extends into infinity, merging views with water, such as a lake or the ocean (most dramatic effect), or over natural environments. This type of design is most effective when the property has a steep slope.
While not for every yard, negative edge pools can provide a dramatic effect. The environment has to be correct, and the design has to consider all of the possible views of the pool in order to properly experience the effect. The proper line of view must exist from the primary viewing/entertaining space in order to realize the full visual effect. At Abstract Pools and Spas, we involve the client in the process of determining the best focal area in order to create the impressive views that a negative edge design can provide. If a negative edge pool is built without the proper visual perspective, then the illusion is not effective.
Raised Pools
Another creative view, especially when the lot is steep, small, or otherwise inhospitable to a traditional in-ground pool, is to actually build a raised pool.
Raised pools involve the construction with one or more pool walls being exposed. A raised pool has several features that make them attractive to homeowners.
- An unusable area of the property is made into a usable, entertaining area, enhancing the value of the home.
- The view from the home is enhanced with a view of the pool, as well as from the pool area through the same similar visual benefits associated with a negative edge pool design.
- If the lot is extremely sloped, there may be a need for the construction of a retaining wall. By incorporating a pool into the construction, the pool wall can serve dual purposes.
Raised pools can be an investment made on lake front property, mountain homes, and in downtown/urban areas, where the lots are smaller, and the yards are sloped
